In 2009, Mike broke the story of Kyle Turley’s near death experience and subsequent diagnosis as symptomatic of CTE in his article Effects of Head Trauma Scaring Turley. In it he chronicles Turley’s career and his struggles leading up to the diagnosis. After reading this article Sean immediately reached out to Kyle and began a dialog with him about making this film. Mike Silver is Sean’s favorite football writer and a trusted friend. They were “set up” on a journalism blind date in 1998, after Sean’s grandmother had been a part of the team who delivered Mike’s first child, Natalie.
